Shelf Preparation
Appropriate preparation of library materials for the shelf ensures that they are properly organized, retrievable using library catalogs, easily identified as library property, and protected from theft. Clear, accurate marking of call numbers, and careful application of barcode labels, book plates, ownership marks, and anti-theft devices are essential to fully incorporating materials into a library collection.
The Weissman Preservation Center (Harvard University Library) and Conservation Services (Harvard College Library) can advise about the selection of labeling systems, book plates and adhesives, ownership marks, and anti-theft strips or targets.
These services are available free-of-charge to the Harvard University Library community.
