Harriet Beecher Stowe (1811-1896) was one of eleven children of the
Reverend Lyman Beecher. In 1836 she married Calvin Ellis Stowe (1802-1886),
an accomplished Biblical scholar. Harriet carved out a career as a writer
while raising seven children and dealing with Calvin's frequent bouts
of depression and traveling engagements on seminary business. After
the success of Uncle Tom's Cabin, she sat for a number of daguerreotype
portraits.
