With daguerreotypes housed in fourteen locations
throughout the University, most researchers do not realize the extent
of the collections as a whole, nor are they able to compare images in
separate collections.
In addition, daguerreotypes are unique images created by a direct-positive
process that produces no original negatives. Thus the preservation of
these unique images becomes critical if their availability for future
research is to be ensured.
