Terrestrial globe, ca. 1810
James Wilson, Bradford, Vt., publisher
(Harvard Map Collection)
Among its extensive map collections, Harvard has several fine examples of early globe-making. This is the first globe printed and produced in the United States. The manufacturer, James Wilson, began his career as a schoolteacher. After apprenticing with Amos Doolittle, a well-known cartographer in New Haven, Wilson returned to Vermont and established his own business.
In addition to structural damage, the surface of the globe shows years of heavy use.
