Treasures at Risk

battered Judaica bindings Shelf of eighteenth and early nineteenth-century Hebrew texts
(Judaica Department, Widener Library)

Initial research indicates that the bindings on these eighteenth and early nineteenth-century Hebrew texts provide considerable insight into the socio-economic factors influencing Jewish communities in Western Europe.

The conservation of damaged book bindings must be carried out with full consideration of the valuable historical information they harbor. The Harvard libraries hold over 800,000 rare books.
