Source Material Preparation
General Collections
Imaging Services offers materials preparation services for general collections reformatting projects. Materials preparation includes page-by-page collation to determine that each work is complete. During this process, staff members identify potential problems associated with reformatting – narrow inner margins, missing pages or volumes, foldouts, maps, etc. In these cases, explicit handling instructions are written for camera operator to ensure that materials are handled safely and that all information content is captured during the reformatting process. When necessary, interlibrary loan requests are issued for replacements of missing or damaged pages, and if necessary, replacement monograph and serial volumes may be requested. As a result, reformatted copies are often more complete than the original printed versions in the collection.
Manuscripts
In order to facilitate the digitization of manuscript collections, Imaging Services offers the following services for the preparation of manuscript materials. These services are available for collections materials that have been processed and reviewed by the holding repository prior to delivery of materials to Imaging Services.
- Final review and image count: page by page review and count of images to be digitized in each volume or folder.
- Preparation of text files with label and structural information necessary for the delivery of materials through the Page Delivery Service. Labels may be copied from pre-existing finding aid or keyed in from folder titles.
